Every year, millions of people in the UK are scammed and only a small proportion of the scams and frauds are reported.
Scammers will approach people in a variety of ways; they’ll often appear extremely professional, may pretend to be calling from places you’re familiar with and may already have some information about you - which makes them appear genuine.

Talking about scams is a powerful way to raise awareness and also to reduce the stigma around scams. By having conversations about scams and fraud we take away the fear of the unknown, which can result in improved wellbeing and happiness in older people.

Talking about scams
Talking about scams isn’t always easy; it can be embarrassing admitting we’ve fallen for a scam, and it may be uncomfortable asking about someone’s experiences of being scammed. But staying silent benefits scammers so we must spread awareness through talking. Sharing stories and experiences can help others to recognise the warning signs and avoid a scam themselves.
Some scam victims don’t realise that they’re being scammed or refuse to believe it. They may feel that the scammers are their friends, or that things will work out if they continue to respond. This can make it difficult to talk to them about getting help, but regular conversations may make it easier for them to spot the signs and to eventually take action to stop the scammers themselves.
